Unexpected weekend game
Nick GeorgiadisUntil Tuesday. I’d been planning on spending this Saturday morning watching the rain tumble down from the comfort of my sitting room. But no! Plans were afoot to mess up Jani’s detailed match previews (which are surely generated by AI?) by arranging a last minute trip to Bourne Deeping. Many of us hadn’t been there for a matter of weeks so were pining for the glorious reaches of northern Peterborough. And its doughnut van. (Alas said van was nowhere to be seen. Perhaps put off by the rain?).
Not so the intrepid sevenths, the usual mix of elder statesmen - I mean experience, you can’t buy experience, and the zest of youth.
So, I chauffeured the chairman up the A14 (the privileges of chairmanship clearly include club car and driver) and was treated to a pep talk. Which consisted of being told Chairman John had been burning the candle at both ends having been out till late last night carousing.
You wouldn’t know it to see him goalhang. Oh, no. He was his usual predatory self. But I digress.
On arrival, we were told BD didn’t have a keeper and might want to borrow Miles. Generous to a fault, we said, let’s see.
The prematch talk was “take it easy on these - they are mainly kids and don’t have a keeper”.
So, being obedient types, that’s exactly what we did. Casting aside the solid shape and passing of previous weeks, we played entirely into their hands and decided passing and marking were beneath us.
We went in at half time 2-1 up (probably - the memory isn’t quite what it was). This did the trick and BD decided they didn’t want Miles after all.
The second half was more energetic and age / experience (and having a very good keeper) told by the end. We won 7-3. Goals from Barton (3), Chairman Greaves (2), Dex (just the one this week) and someone else (not me as I didn’t cross the halfway line for fear of a nosebleed). (Ed- Andy Thomas scored this one . Best goal of the game: Silky skills at the top of the D, followed by trademark thunderbolt push shot into the corner of the goal)
So, we enter the Club Day break undefeated and top of the league (though this was a friendly so that last comment is irrelevant).
And we all had a spiffing morning. Much better than loitering at home.
Thanks very much to all who played, organised and BD for hosting us.
