L6 0-6 St Neots Ladies 4
The 6’s lost their first away game of the season 6-0 (2-0 at half time). Whilst this scoreline may not look great on paper initially, it looks a lot better when you realise that South only had 9 players, who all played really well, with both umpires and the St Neots squad congratulating them at the end. South played the 1st half with only 8 outfield players and Tadi in goal. It took St Neots 13 minutes to score their first and 28 minutes to score the second. South attempted to play some great open hockey on many occasions, sometimes the final pass let them down, but on quite a few occasions, we got into their D and made the keeper / defence clear the lines, and the intent was there which bodes well for the future. The duo of Zarah Warr, Alice MacDonald-Foster up front, together with Penelope Robinson March who played centre mid, all played exceptionally well. Poppy Blair had a fantastic game in defence and Tadi pulled off some great saves. In the second half, St Neots leant us 2 players, but by this time, our squad were very tired and this showed, but they put up a great fight right up until the end. It would have been lovely to have scored a goal and our best chances came in the 2nd half when we had a full 10 players on the outfield. I firmly believe if we’d have started with 11 on the pitch, it would have been an entirely different game. The other players of note were Astrid Mann and Niamh MacLachlan. Poppy, Minuo and Rosie played in defence, Penelope and Astrid in midfield, and Alice and Zarah up front. In essence, they all worked their socks off and had every reason to hold their heads up high and be very proud of the game they played.
