5s biggest win of the season!

Lou Walker

A great team performance from South L5s gave us our biggest win of the season so far and made sure that it was worth the early start on a cold, wet morning. The weather may have been grim but the hockey was beautiful. An early attack by South was touched off the back by the defence, judged deliberate, and Sarah duly struck in the short corner to give us the lead. The pitch was slow but South were fast, running hard to win the 50-50 balls and interceptions. A second goal followed quite soon, this time from Amy, who had been making strong runs on goal and got the reward for her efforts – along with a couple of PoM votes for a superb all round game. Elodie should have her name on the scoresheet for an excellent finish – unfortunately, the whistle had already gone for a defensive foot in the D, a split second before she put the ball into the net. The corner was cleared but continuing pressure allowed Nicky to strike one in and we went into the half time break 3 goals up.

With South having the better of the game, the defence took the opportunity to push up the pitch, with Lauren, Anna and Hattie making some great runs up to the midfield. A nice bit of triangular passing and 1-2s led to Amy’s second goal.

Sarah deservedly took the PoM vote for her hat trick, but it was teamwork that won the day here. Although we were the stronger team, Huntingdon did not give up, and Lydia had to make some great saves to keep us ahead, earning a few votes. Our clean sheet was wiped away in the last few minutes after a great strike from former Southerner Emily, just inside the post. Today’s game shows how we have really come together as a team over the first half of the season, and gives plenty of hope for a few more wins in 2026.

Hat Trick!
