L5 3-3 Long Sutton Ladies 2

Lou Walker

L5s set off across the fens for our furthest away game of the season. The stakes were high – the L5s sat in 10th place, just above the relegation zone, with Long Sutton just one place and 6 points below us. We knew it would be a close game, with points definitely achieveable but by no means guaranteed, especially as the long trip meant only 12 players were available. We negotiated the bumpy roads, with some extra diversions for floods, and there were a few slightly car-sick players hurrying onto the pitch. It was a strong start for South. There was strong play throughout from Victoria as left forward, driving up the wing and nearly always beating the defender, and Sophie powering through midfield. Her hard work transformed into an early goal and South took the lead. Long Sutton’s response was swift, and shortly after pushback, they equalised, after we allowed them too much time and space in the D, and didn’t take our hit-outs quickly enough. The lapse continued and Long Sutton pulled ahead. South did not give up, and Sophie bagged her second goal. Lauren was everywhere on the pitch, pushing up to support the attack but always racing back to defend when it turned over  - where does she get the energy?! Elodie had another great game, with many drives into the D and putting pressure on the Long Sutton goal. She was unlucky not to put her name on the score sheet, but definitely contributed to our tally, and set up for Freya to tap in her first ever goal for South, and our ultimate equaliser. It finished 3-3 at half time. The second half was similarly even, with end to end play, but no more goals, and we finished with a well earned point and no change to our position. When the game finished, most of us dashed off to Wisbech to double up for the 6s (might as well make the trip worthwhile!) so there was no voting, but honourable PoM mentions must go to Sophie, Victoria and Lauren.
