M5 1-4 City of Peterborough Mens 6

James Morrison

What a day. After what feels like an eternity of grey skies and frozen pitches, Saturday finally delivered the first proper glimpse of spring. The sun was out, the birds were singing, and somewhere in the distance you could almost hear a lawnmower — the universal signal that winter has lost its grip. Daffodils popping up, someone somewhere buying barbecue charcoal, and it's only March. It was, by all accounts, a glorious day to be outside doing anything at all, and Cambridge South had chosen to spend it playing hockey.

Dan took his place between the posts, no doubt enjoying the warmth on his gloves for once. In front of him, Bhav, James H and Andy marshalled the centre of defence like a wall. Etienne ,James M and Nuwan held things together on the wings. Sandy sat in front of them all at CDM, the last line before midfield and probably the best-positioned person on the pitch to appreciate the daffodils coming through behind the far goal.

In midfield, Seb, Jan, Stu and Nev all put in a decent shift, kept things ticking along, and most importantly got to do it all in the glorious spring sunshine.

Up front, Rob, Craig, Jordan and James P led the attacking line and kept Peterborough's defence busy enough, with James P's goal offering a little bloom of hope — like the first crocus pushing through after a long winter

Was it a tactical masterclass? No. Was it a defensive clinic? Absolutely not. But was it a gorgeous spring afternoon where everyone got a bit of vitamin D and had a lovely run around? Yes it was.

Peterborough won four one. But the sun was out and that's what matters.
