5s survived!
Lou WalkerThe sun was shining on a beautiful spring day for our last game of the season. There was nothing at stake for either side, other than wanting to go out on a high with a great last game – Huntingdon & Northstowe are sadly already bottom and relegated no matter what, and South knew that in the unlikely (we hoped) event of a defeat, we’d stay safe in 10th place with enough points that 11th placed Long Sutton couldn’t catch us no matter what. With this in mind, we tried out a slightly different formation to the one we had stuck with all season – 3 at the back, midfield diamond and 3 up front. Lauran had a fantastic game at bottom diamond, like she was made for this position. Unfortunately a few of us got slightly confused and lost shape at times. It was a very positive start for South, with Rittman opening the scoring within a few minutes of push back. Were South about to cruise to victory in our final game? Certainly not – Huntingdon had other ideas, playing with the resilience and determination that has seen them through an undoubtedly tough season. We knew that former South player Emily, their top scorer, would be the danger woman and ensured to mark her tightly at all times (to the point of Lou almost following her off the pitch when she subbed!) but a couple of marking slip ups did allow her team mate to equalise late in the second half. Tadi made several crucial saves – her kicking power noticeably stronger compare to this time last season. Both sides came out determined after the break, and Rittman added a second goal to regain our lead. Rosie had another great game in midfield, helping to direct the play with great distribution and runs. We rounded off the game with tasty teas at the Queen Edith. Unfortunately there was no time for PoM and LoM voting as Lou and Lauren had to scarper to St Ives for the L6s game, and everyone else was engrossed in enjoying their food in the sunshine. But on today’s team performance, it would have been hard to pick out one star player. We live to fight another season in Div 4, and should all be proud of how our hockey has improved as a team and individuals over the season.
