Not Feeling Too (Cambridge) Blue About It
Polly LockyerThis week, we went head to head with the Cambridge University 4ths - a team of fresh faced students who were likely using the match as an excuse to escape their unpacking. Historically, we’ve managed to catch the newly formed uni sides off guard at the start of the season, so we rolled onto the pitch full of hopeful optimism that history might repeat itself.
Unfortunately, our spatial awareness let us down early in the first half. A few South players failed to accurately estimate 5 metres, invading the personal space of the Uni ball taker and conceding a short corner. The opposition promptly turned our social distancing failure into the opening goal. A slightly frustrating lesson to learn - perhaps we should let our opposition play in the stinky South bibs, we'd definitely give them at least 5m of clearance!
One goal down at half-time, we reset and took to the pitch with renewed spirit. It was another fairly evenly half, with the whole team on their toes desperately trying to find the goal we needed. Finally, the breakthrough came - a lovely ball in from Sophie, was picked up by Polly, shipped over to Amy, who finished it beautifully to equalise. Collective sighs of relief.
While it wasn't the win we’d hoped for, a point is a point. Player of the Match went to Sélène, who worked tirelessly and pulled off all sorts of ninja goalie shapes. She single-handedly saved our skins during a particularly wobbly 10-minute spell in the second half when we were a defender down and trying to adjust our positions. A very close runner-up for PoM was Nooshi, who brought tireless energy and great vision to the midfield.
Onwards to next week!

For such a spectacular fall, but such determination trying to get back up whilst still playing!
