A win is a win, is a win!

Nev Warren

Cambridge South hosted St Neots 3 to an Autumnal afternoon of low lying sun and cloudy on the St Mary's pitch.  The toss was won by St Neots and they took advantage of playing with the sun in the first half. South welcomed back club stalwart Matt R to the fold of league hockey.

After playing away for the past two weeks with bare elevens to the league leaders and fourth place, South had the luxury of two substitutes, to the Saint's four, but at least this gave some rest and comfort.  The game started as a battle of direct long ball hitting by St Neots against a quick passing and moving South side. South's defence were keeping just ahead of the difficulties from the skilled forwards, as they benefitted from some accurate hard balls. The M5's also made some promising forays, but fell short of the final ball being good enough to trouble the goal.

After winning a short corner for his only main contribution in the game, returning Skipper Nev W was desperate to use the chance to change the game.  After the short corner fell to Rob B, it was dispatched with relative ease into the unguarded near post to edge South into the lead midway through the half.

Halftime messages were pass accurately and quickly.  When this happened, South tore up the opposition and when it didn't Saint's took advantage! Rob's clever and unselfish play in the circle led to Craig H slapping home just before the hour. A quick platy from Craig H to Rob B set up Henry O to have a chance to seal it at the back post, only for the St Neots' goalie to dive and miraculously tip it around the post.

Rob B had a great game and was running amok and causing havoc in between the lines throughout the game.  Unfortunately, he went on a mazy run that was too citrussy as after turning the opposition centre back, was seemingly tackled by thin air before power slamming into the turf, coughing up possession that led to the short corner below.

The rest of the game the back five of Matt R , Sandy T, Cam G, James H were resolute with Etienne B's performance being his best and standout of the season, racing across the back line to cut out two potential one-on-ones! Unfortunately, Andy Moore was unable to get a clean sheet when a penalty corner strike was too close and struck too well!

So a 2-1 win for the good guys and plenty of positives for the team to work with moving forwards!

It was a particularly vicious gust that got hold of my ankle. I'm surprised the umpires didn't follow suit and blow.
