Wisbech and the Wounded
Lizzie ParkerCambridge South’s L4s were raring to go this week off the back of last week’s success, with our furthest away game at Wisbech.
South started strong with first push back and established dominant possession of the ball over our opposition early. Quick, accurate square and line passes saw the ball move towards the goal and Naomi’s positioning on the post allowed her to execute a lovely goal, her second of the season. Her efforts continued throughout the game with attacking runs on the left wing.
Tight presses around Wisbech’s free hits and sixteen yard hit outs meant the opposition were struggling to create any opportunities for passes.
A solid ball past several defenders’ sticks saw Kat score the second goal; a player who worked hard during the game, covering great lengths of the pitch and creating space.
Throughout the game, Zara and Tess had some excellent back and forth passes down the right-wing, gaining distance up the pitch – a true dynamite duo, but no finish just yet.
Katie remained calm in her defensive central position picking up balls and skilfully manoeuvring around players and South’s continued harassment in the D was rewarded with a powerful goal by Bex, taking the score to three-nil.
Niamh was also quick to intercept any counterattacks from the opposition, until her untimely calf injury which sadly excluded her from the game’s second half.
The second half was no less eventful with Wisbech continuing to put up a fight!
Sammy, Ginny and Lou offered strong support at the back with Ana (GK) making crucial saves when necessary.
The game was however temporarily paused when a deflected ball resulted in Liz ‘heading’ the ball (ouch!). She took it like a trooper with no complaints, although it was a shame to lose her after such great play.
Again, Tess stormed up the pitch, albeit this time solo, earning herself the fourth and final goal of the game and the well-deserved title of ‘Man of the Match’. She too suffered an injury in the second half, when hit in the leg by a Wisbech stick, and was forced to go off for a few minutes to stretch out her resulting leg cramp, leaving South with ten players on the attack.
The game remained intense right up until the final whistle with consecutive long and short corners in South’s favour. Unfortunately, no goals scored this time, leaving the final score at four-nil to Cambridge South’s L4s.
Despite the many injuries we acquired (wishing all those a speedy recovery before next week!), it was an all-round great game from the L4s, illustrated by the varied MoM nominations. It may only have been the second league game of the season but if the team continues in this way, Zara’s ambition of at least ten goals every game may no longer be unattainable!
