L1s A-Z
Georgie HurfordA is for Amalia - don’t mess with the girl, she’s ridiculously hard as I found to my peril, bouncing off of her.
B is for balls… Lots of them flying at the Spalding goal in various formats - open play, penalty corners, penalty flick…with the ultimate reward of one going in.
C is for “C’mon, Alice” - who turns off the lights in the shower when people are still in there? Honestly!
D is for defence - Spalding had a few breaks but it was generally quite quiet at the back for South.
E is for England rugby… We channelled their thrashing of the Aussies this morning, even if we didn’t thrash to quite the same level.
F is for flick (of the penalty variety) - executed with unflappable precision into the right hand corner by captain MC Robs. Could also be for Flix, making a triumphant return to the L1s.
G is for goalkeeper - specifically Spalding’s. Will you just stop saving all of our shots on goal, please?
H is for halfway - you’re nearly halfway through - keep reading.
I is for impressive sliding tackle. Katie Gibson showed off her defensive skills and now has astro burn to add to her growing list of afflictions, poor girl.
J is for jelly babies. They really do make the difference at half time, except for the yellow ones apparently.
K is for Kerri - first ever club hockey match. Go girl! Think you should definitely give up on netball and come over to the dark side for good.
L is for Loopy, as stated in her MoM nomination - she only had one touch in the game, but what a touch that was (of the ball…you filthy people).
M is for man of the match - well deserved by Amalia who properly “smashed it”.
N is for nice weather - it actually wasn’t raining for the first time in about six weeks.
O is for opposition - all agreed they were a very nice bunch.
P is for “purple to purple passing.” I think this was accomplished at various points throughout and it did look good!
Q is for the Queen Edith pub. The rugby club was out of action so we got to eat our pizza in these rather plush surroundings
R is for rude - Kim’s comment to Katie Cooil and I to, “Get back girls, she’s bound to be faster than both of you.”
S is for Spalding. Thanks for making the lengthy trek across the fens to provide us with a competitive game of hockey.
T is for top of the league! Whoop whoop, still! Long may it continue.
U is for umpires - great performance lads, you even earned MoM nominations for your “good and confident decisions.”
V is for V-shaped press - is that what we’re supposed to be doing or is it a W? We got better at it after the half time demo anyway.
W is for woman, of the bionic kind. Not a lot needs to be said about that other than Kim making helpful suggestions about time off the pitch…
X is for x-rated hockey skills demonstrated today, obvs.
Y is for young. Are opposition players getting younger or are some of us entering our twilight years?
Z is for Zzzz… Are you still with me after reading this terribly themed match report?
