Third Time Lucky
Sean GardinerFirstly I’d like to thank everyone for making this game happen after two failed attempts, so well done. To the match. Nice day for it; a bit cold then it warmed up just like the game itself. First half was shared, one goal each. Everybody a little rusty, a few guys coming back from injury and early in the morning, so not the free flowing hockey the 5s are used to and not the 6s.
The midfield was very evenly contested and the 5s’ defence had the upper hand, not letting goal machine Simon Ta score, and forwards on both sides not making the most of chances; very unlike the forwards that were playing, so the next goal would change it. Half time and I just reminded the lads about simple passes and easy options. Amazingly it sunk in, thank god. Both sides ended up with ten men, so still even, but what changed was the simple and quick passes the 5s put together and a bit more clinical finishing and finding the spaces, so a very happy captain in the end.
The 6s fought to the end and large parts of the game very even so just a few things to work on for both teams. But we in the 5s were lucky to have experience on our side which made the difference. I think streetwise is the word. The 6s had youth and a bit of lack of communication and experience but that will come. Comedy of me then Michael making silly errors but mine looked better! Good run out and great time had by all so keep it up guys. Score in the end was five-one to the 5s and lots of great performances all round.

You are missing a goalscorer, Sean. Tom x1, James x2 and Jo does not add up to 5...

"Jo playing for both sides" ... that'll be three South men's teams he turned out for on Saturday then! What a club superstar!
