Start as you mean to go on.
South went into this match confident that we could get another win, but we knew we would have to work for it and play well. The game could not have had a better start. Ely had push back, the ball was quickly intercepted and passed up the pitch, Hattie Stanley drove up the right and into the D, and struck it straight into the goal. Yay! Shortly after the restart South were back in Ely’s D again, putting pressure on the goal. Lizzie Bourn picked this moment to have a little sit-down as the ball came towards her, which earned several lemon votes. Overall it was an excellent game from Lizzie, making lots of great drives up the line and into the D
There were some more goals which included a short corner strike from Bex Jackson (her first apparently) and a neat follow up from Nicky Simler. Ely countered by taking advantage of a slip in man marking and overloading in the D but South held strong and fought back to increase our lead. Good positioning from Helen Durrant allowed her and Louise Walker to play a nice one-two and send the ball into the D for Nicky to finish and score her second goal.
4-1 at half time but we knew we had to keep the pace and pressure up. Spirits were very positive, even though we had to resort to the leftovers of last week’s slightly hardened half time sweets for our sugar fix. Sorry guys!
At the back, Elly Bull, May McCool and Hayley Pryke were keeping busy with some well-timed tackles to repel Ely’s attacks. Elly’s dedication to keeping the ball out of South’s D extended to sliding on the floor at times, earning a few lemon votes. There was some great man marking from May, hassling away anyone who tried to get the ball near her. We were glad to welcome star goalie Luisa Krausova back for this game, and she made some essential clearances to keep the scoreline in our favour.
Elaine Paterson, Charlotte Fraigneau and Claire Cormie were running hard all around the midfield, with some great positioning and passes. Once again, South’s press was strong throughout the game, with Bex and Nicky trapping several of the hit outs.
Hattie continued to hammer shots at Ely’s goal, and completed her hat trick a second before the final whistle. She was a well deserved player of the match winner, but votes also went to Bex, Nicky, Claire, Helen and Louise, reflecting that this was a great team performance. Our biggest and best win yet – here’s to many more! (with sweets next time). Well done everyone.
We had to get off the pitch to make way for the L1s game so no time for a victory shot at the pitch. Instead here's a pic of us celebrating with pizza J
Hattie Stanley
Fantastic hat trick - scored straight from push back and on final whistle!
Lou Walker
Forgot one of the most important captain responsibilities - bringing the half time sweets!
