Date: 16.11.24
Venue: St Mary’s and Homerton Theatre
ACT 1: The Build-Up
(The stage opens with the Cambridge South 4s arriving at the pitch. The team is upbeat and prepared.)
NARRATOR:
It’s a cool, breezy day at the pitch, and Cambridge South 4s are ready for the match. The players arrive promptly at 12:15, stretching, chatting, and going over their plans for the upcoming game. Well, most of them. Ali is nowhere to be found.
(The clock ticks closer to 12:30. The players begin their warm-up.)
SAM:
(Checking his watch, then scanning the group)
Where’s Ali? He’s cutting it close.
(Enter Ali, stage left, running onto the pitch at 12:44, out of breath, bag slung over his shoulder.)
ALI:
(Rushing in, panting)
I’m here! I’m here!
SAM:
(Shaking his head, but smiling)
Well, it’s about time. Get warmed up!
(Ali rushes to the bench, just as the referee blows the whistle for the pushback. The match is about to begin.)
ACT 2: The First Half
(The match begins with Cambridge City pressing early. They move the ball quickly, and South has to work hard to hold them off. City wins several short corners in quick succession.)
NARRATOR:
From the start, Cambridge City come out with intensity. Their passing is crisp, and their attacks are relentless. But South defend well, blocking and clearing several dangerous shots.
(Goalkeeper Joe makes a key save, diving to deny a City shot from a short corner.)
NARRATOR:
Despite their best efforts, their defence can only hold for so long. After wearing South down with four successive short corners, City finally break through with a sneaky ricochet from Jimbo’s heel, giving them a 1-0 lead.
JIMBO:
(Looking sheepish)
I didn’t kick it guys, honest!
NARRATOR:
South continue to battle, showing grit and determination. Oli, in danger of being poached by the 2s, is everywhere—chasing down loose balls, breaking up City’s attacks, and distributing play. But as the first half winds down, City remains in the lead.
(A whistle blows for the interval and the safety curtain comes down, although no ice creams)
INTERVAL: HALF-TIME BREAK
(The cast goes backstage to eat Haribo’s and decide how to act better in the second half.)
ACT 3: The Second Half
(The players return from halftime. Cambridge South are fired up and focused, eager to turn the game around. City come out strong again, determined to seal the victory.)
NARRATOR:
The second half begins with Cambridge City looking to put the game to bed. They move the ball even faster now, exploiting gaps in South’s defence. Within the first ten minutes, City double their lead.
MATT:
(Frustrated, slapping the turf)
Come on, that’s too easy. We can’t let them get away like this.
SAM:
(Shouting from the sidelines)
Stay disciplined, guys! Stick to the game plan!
NARRATOR:
Despite the setback, South refuse to give up. They continue to press forward, working as a unit. Oli and Jordan continue to work tirelessly in the middle of the pitch, trying to create chances for their forwards.
(South earns a penalty corner of their own. The crowd holds its breath as they prepare for the shot. The corner is injected. A clean shot at goal—saved by City’s keeper. The rebound is blocked again. South’s efforts are thwarted.)
NARRATOR:
South come close but can’t find a way through. And just when it seems like they might pull one back, City strike again, and again, and again. By the 60th minute, it’s 4-0, despite Joe’s flying pads. City’s dominance is undeniable, but South keep pushing, worn down but determined.
JOE:
Get them down the other end… and stay there!
(With just a few minutes left, South finds a late break. A rebound gives an opening for James, who gives it a whack. The goalie makes a heroic effort to stop it, but the ball slips through his arm and rolls into the goal. 5-1.)
SOUTH TEAM:
(Shouting in unison, relieved)
Yes! Finally!
NARRATOR:
It’s a well-deserved consolation goal. South finally get one on the scoreboard, but the match is over. The final score is 5-1 to Cambridge City. It’s a tough loss for South, but they’ve shown incredible heart, grit, and resilience throughout the match. They may have been outclassed on the day, but they know they gave everything they had.

Cambridge South 4s 1 – 5 Cambridge City 3s
